The short story
From clip art to pop art: Digital to Analog Compositions contrasts digital and analog by presenting the same subject matter in both mediums.
Black & white line art was coloured and enlarged in software, then printed and framed to mimic mass-produced “retail art.” Painted drawings were then created, based on the pixelated digital prints, resulting in smooth renderings similar to, yet distinct from, their digital counterparts.
The long story
Digital representation limits the storage of information to a collection of discrete values, while analog representation permits infinite values across a continuous range.
Digitized information can be continually duplicated without degradation; copies of copies are indistinguishable from the original. In contrast, analog information degrades as subsequent copies are made.
When converting analog data to digital, losses are incurred as the continuous values are limited to the set of possible digital values. When converting digital data back to analog, the missing gaps are approximated with a filter.
My work, Digital to Analog Compositions, contrasts these two mediums. The same subject matter is presented in digital form -- pixelated inkjet prints framed to mimic mass-produced "retail art" -- and in analog form as painted drawings based on the digital prints. In the analog compositions, the pen serves as a filter to create a smoother representation similar to, yet distinct from, its digital counterpart.
Through the use of appropriated, black & white, line art, this project further explores a parallel conversion between clip art and pop art.
