Classic Dilbert.

Saw Showdown last night -- at the Fringe Fest -- by the Solid State Breakdance Collective, a group of girls who rocked the house!

Went mountain biking last night in Pinhey Forest again. Got pretty soaked; it rained earlier and all that foilage really collects the wet. Not as fun as last time :(

So there's soldiers all over the place in the foodcourt. Hmmm. I guess the army's here to protect us from G8 protestors who might storm the place in a hungry fit. Oh my.

Shift article about Microsoft's involvement w/ P3P, a better on-line privacy management scheme.

Saw COBRA: The Musical last night at the Fringe Festival. It was HILARIOUS! I won't soon forget this live rendition of those memorable cartoon villans and their failed attempt to put on a production of Hamlet to raise funds for their scheme of world domination -- I still have the COBRA theme song stuck in my head :) Cobra Commander and friends were portrayed to a tee -- at least costume-wise, some new dimensions were added to the characters such that old GI Joe re-runs will never be the same. Singing, dancing, fighting, cursing, you name it, COBRA: The Musical has it all!

Checked out the Ottawa Fringe Festival. Blam! is a hilarious play about a guy and his magic scooter, and his ensuing adventures; including near-death experiences, dancin' w/ the scooter, and rockin' in a wheelchair. If you have a chance, check this one out!

Remember the scientists who announced the colour of the universe as some ugly shade of aqua/teal, but then realized they were wrong, and revised their findings to a certain beige colour? Well, they've named it. Cosmic Latte. Whatever -- that name seems dated already.

Clango and the Pointy Haired Boss colide: here and here.

A sad story: the Lady Duck amphibious vehicle sank on Sunday, and four people drowned. This has to be one of the worst ways to go :(

MeFi discusses the introduction of -- gasp -- coloured bank notes:
i'm probably among the minority but i'd prefer to have an electronic card that was linked to my bank account rather than dealing w/cash.
I guess Interac isn't very prevelant down South. Do they even have it?

It's been a busy day ;)

Robot escapes: this sounds a little embellished. Sure, maybe one of these 'intelligent' robots wandered off, but somehow I don't think it was motivated to escape the lab.

Saw 'The Shipping News' last night. I'm sittin' on the fence w/ this one. Some of it was really good, but other parts were just bad. For instance, the plot had quite a few interesting twists as Murphy's Law (or some morbid version thereof) plauged the protagonist, but amidst this were scenes that seemed to have fallen right out of a promotional Newfoundland tourism film.

Strange. This guy's putting up an on-line inventory of all the stuff in his house. Interesting endeavour, but man, the time, the time, the time to do it all!

An asteroid almost hit Earth last Friday. It wasn't reported as being a huge, killer asteroid, but it came w/in the orbit of the moon -- that's cuttin' it pretty close (see the dramatic diagram in the article).

Another heated discusstion at MeFi. This time it's about third-world labour exploits by Disney (and other corporations). I was surprised by some of the comments.

I hope this is a joke. IBM has a poster about simplifying tasks. Check out the instructions to order said poster:

Click on the "Search for publications" link, then search the publication ordering system by typing in the publication number. The publication number for this poster is provided below.
Hilarious!

Somebody on the local newsgroup has a guillotine for sale:
cast irom guillotine, base 20 inches square, blade rusty but sharp, etc... if interested, please, e-mail me
My question is, what's the "etc" referring to?

Salon article about DJing and electronic music says that mainstream American audiences don't "get it" b/c of the lack of lyrics in the music and wanting stage pressence of a DJ. Well, duh . . . I don't think the article really adds anything new to the "live act vs. dj" arguement.

This would be one scary machine to see comin' through the forest!

MetaFilter discusses people paying for the seat next to them on the airplane when they spill over into it. Hilarious. Mean spirited at times, but hilarious.

RoboCup's a go! (previous post) Not much info on the website in terms of actual competition coverage, though :(

Saw Herbaliser last night at Babylon. They were pretty good: a horn section, bass guitar, drums, keyboards, and turntables! I was surprised how busy it was, not b/c of the band, but on account of so many other Tuesday-night shows at Babylon having small attendances.

From a local newsgroup:
In an effort to clean out my garage, I have a 6ft tall fake christmas tree for trade for a couple of boxes of Kraft Dinner and a 2L bottle of coke. The tree is in good shape although it could use a bit of straightening (shouldn't be too hard, I just haven't gotten around to doing it) and comes with some christmas lights.

The new US$20 bill contains hidden images of the twin tower attacks. See for yourself. Starbucks ad pulled b/c of alledged similarity to the attacks.

Thorough article about robot soccer. I especially like this quote regarding the state of robotics:
"You know, human children learn more in their first five years than we've learned in the entire history of robotics. When you work in this field, you develop a tremendous appreciation for the human body. It's got a robust vision system, sensors all over, dozens of articulations and tons of computing power, all flawlessly integrated. It's fascinating."

Just got back from a great trip to Calgary. Attended dEb's convocation and hung out w/ her parents; met up w/ some of her hometown friends, as well. Back at work for the time being, and then it's off to the 'shwa for the weekend.

(This entry is terse b/c -- dare I say it -- I'm starting to bore of blogging. I'm not planning to stop, it's just that I haven't lately felt like writing very much here. Hmm, that sort of sounds bad now that I've typed it. Am I supposed to justify why I don't feel like writing here? Nah. I plan to keep posting on a near-daily basis, and of course linking interesting stuff I come across; things just might be more brief, is all.)

Because it's 06/06, I have lots of links for you!

Retro space toys is in! Joe Blow Glassworks has glass (!) ray guns, and Rocked USA makes reproductions of robot toys from the 50's/60's. Both companies use rocket logos, too.

Lower case sound: tiny sounds amplified to minimalists' delight -- sort of reminds me of the days when people recorded bird calls and then s-l-o-w-e-d them down to reveal musical patterns otherwise unheard. I'm further reminded of my old tape experiments insiried by John Oswald, which further reminds me that I should start making some noisey circuits one of these days.

If this isn't a sh*tty blog, I don't know what is ;)

Speaking of sh*t, may I make reference to this post as I once again 'enjoyed' fries for lunch while the local trash bin dined on a delicious club, w/ mayo and butter that I DID NOT ASK FOR. I'm gonna start finding these people's cars/homes and seeing how they like mayo and butter where it doesn't belong >:|

Sentimental article for those that cruised the BBS's.
