A large thundercloud has moved in on us. I'm sitting in my prime eighth floor viewing spot as lightening strikes in the distance. Birds are flying around, looking for a safe perch? Cowbells clink in my headphones, along w/ a nice 4/4 beat. The coffee is brewed and it promises to be an interesting Friday morning.

Paintings of a painter. I like.

So this is what it takes to get into the commercial gallery scene in Ottawa. Music to my eyes! Make sure to check out all the other great stuff featured on the Calligrammes site . . .

dEb started The French Club -- a group for socializing in French -- and we had our first meeting last night. It was okay; I found it challenging, but still fairly fun. Went to Zibibbo afterwards to watch the live painting and soak up some inspiration.

So is I saw SWAT this weekend, too. What a horrible movie. Completely predictable, the action wasn't even that great, and there wasn't even climax -- it just sort of worked it's way to the ending, and that was that. Boring.

Anyhow, there was this horrible commercial before the flic, it featured lowrider bicycles, longboards, AND Vespa-style scooters. And here's the worst part: it was for pants at Zellers. Horrible. I'm surprised they didn't have some dude scratchin' in the background, too. Man, it's SO hard to be cool and underground these days. I guess I'll have to pull out that pogo stick . . . the ride's not bad, and like the way my silver chains dance around my neck w/ each hop . . .

I was out of town this past weekend to witness my brother tie the knot! He got married in Guelph and is now honeymooning in Hawaii. Peter Appleyard played at the reception: very groovy.

While away, I finished reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which was somewhat depressing. Being back at work after a nice four day weekend is also somewhat depressing.

However, I'll be hawking my work at an "Art in the Park" type event this Saturday at Dovercourt Recreation Centre, so that's exciting -- stop by if you're in the area . . .

I updated the below post w/ a pic of my Square Foot piece.

This made me laugh today.

Longboarding to work today, a pine cone almost took me out.

Square Foot @ AWOL Gallery

Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 31, 2003.
Opening Reception: Friday, August 22 from 7p.m. to 11 p.m.

76 Ossington Avenue, One block North of Queen St. West
Gallery hours: Thursday to Sunday, noon to 7p.m. Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

Press release:

"Square Foot" brings together over 185 + artists showcasing their work at A.W.O.L. gallery.

Each artist was given the criteria of creating work that is exactly one square foot with subject and medium of the artists’ choosing.

We define our space by units of measure and lead our lives accordingly. When presented with set parameters can creativity flourish? Here the artist is given the potential to make the most of a given limitation.

With artwork in the hundreds laid out on a grid, from floor to ceiling, the gallery will be transformed into one large, encompassing installation. It is yet to be seen whether individuality will thrive or perish against a set uniformity.

I've submitted a piece to this Toronto show featuring 185+ artists! If you're in the area, I encourage you to drop by! If you're so nice to take a picture while you're there, that'd be great, since I won't be able to make the show . . .

The lights go on, the lights go off

So, the power outage . . . It was big deal, but at the same time, it wasn't. While it was happening, it wasn't actually a big deal, 'surviving' w/o power, that is. I had a BBQ and sat outside on the porch w/ dEb and my landlords, and a few beers. What was a big deal was imagining how long it would last -- how long would people stay sane if the power were to stay down for an extended period. The radio threatened anywhere from two days to two weeks! Ha! It was more like twenty hours from where I sat. Worked half a day on Friday, and it's pretty much been normal over here in Quebec this week. Gov't folks in Ottawa have today, and who knows how much more of this week, off. Lucky duckies . . .

Went to my landlords' lakeside cottage this weekend. Relaxed w/ nice weather, and did a bit of canoeing.

Been longboarding and scooting into work this week. Very fun :)

The bike tour was great! Food was much better than last year! The weather held up while we were riding, though Saturday night's campout was pretty rainy. We maintained a decent pace of 20km/h over the two days.

Goin' on the MS Bike Tour this weekend. Two days of pampered cycling. By pampered I mean 85km on Saturday, and 65km on Sunday; with food/drink stops every 20km, tonnes of food at the start, mid, and finishing points, and a truck to haul all my gear. All I have to do is enjoy the ride :)

. . . and it was dEb's bday yesterday, so everyone who hasn't already done so, should wish her a happy one.

Ha! Don't eat that banana!

Had a good weekend: dEb's parents are in town, and mine came for a visit. We met, we ate, we laughed, we enjoyed.

Been scooting and longboarding to work this week: fun!

New Kraftwerk album forthcoming! Hooray!

Despite the weather report -- which everyday lately has called for rain later in the day, preceeded by a nice morning -- I longboarded into work today. Pretty fun. Almost took a spill though: got a little worried on the Portage bridge by one of those expansion slot things and nearly lost the board to traffic; well, I did lose the board, but it didn't see any traffic, phew . . .
